Emp 203: More on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
You have the right to a safe workplace. PPE protects you from injuries caused by hazards like chemicals, noise, falling objects, and sharp or heavy materials. Not using PPE makes your attitude the biggest risk.
Your employer provides PPE when required. Using it—whether comfortable or not—is part of your job and vital for your health.
Questions You Should Already Know (Day 1)
If you don't know these answer, take the time to figure these out with your mentor or supervisor:
- Shorts: When it’s hot, can you wear them?
- Shoes: What type are required in the yard? Do requirements change by job?
- Gloves: When should you use them, what do they prevent, and who must wear them?
- PPE List: What do you need daily? Are there special tasks that require more?
Types of PPE
- Hard hats / Protective helmets: Protect from falling or low-hanging objects. Do not modify.
- Earplugs or earmuffs: Protect against noise. Keep clean; radio earbuds don’t count.
- Safety glasses/goggles: Protect eyes from debris, chemicals, and splashes. Use straps if needed.
- Face shields: Guard against flying objects and chemical exposure.
- Gloves: Protect from chemicals, cuts, sharp or rough surfaces. Use the right type for your job.
- Respirators/dust masks: Protect from dust, fumes, gases, and vapors. Use only as intended.
- Boots and shoes: Leather-toed, slip-resistant, clean soles. Prevent burns, cuts, slips, and falls.
- Chemical suits/insulating clothing: Needed for toxic vapors, gases, or other hazardous environments.
- Monitoring equipment: May be part of protective gear.
- Other protective gear: Electrical safety devices, lockout/tagout, barriers, signs, labels.
- Visibility vests: Ensure you’re seen in low-visibility or high-traffic areas.
- Fall protection: Harnesses and lanyards for working at heights.
Fit and Condition
- PPE must fit properly and be in good shape—no cracks, tears, or holes.
- If unsure about what’s right for your job, ask your supervisor, check the Employee Manual, or review OSHA regulations.
Safety Culture Reminders
- Identify hazards.
- Choose proper PPE.
- Check that PPE works correctly.
- Make sure it fits.
- Shorts: ¿Cuando hace calor, puedes usarlos?
